Welcome to The Tuna Melt Music Sharity Blog!

It is here that I post old records that I've ripped
to Mp3 format (and grouped in .ZIP files) via File Sharing Sites,
album cover scans and, sometimes,
somewhat coherent ramblings related to said shares.

Most of the items shared are rips of Out-of-Print
(or, at least, very difficult to acquire)
Vinyl Records from my own collection,
or Compilations ("Seasonal" or "Genre-Specific") made up of Mp3 files
either digitally collected or ripped from Compact Disk.

Come on in. Look around.
Scroll downward to find available links.
I hope you find something you like.

If you don't,
you can always come back later, as the variety
of what is made available should be pretty wide-ranging.

Man Cannot Live on "Quiet Village" Alone…

As it seems that it may take a bit of time to collect enough "new" tracks to complete the next volume of "Exotic Sounds of Quiet Village", I thought this would be an opportunity to share a couple of other collections that suggest that I might not be that weird after all. Or, at least, that there are others just as weird out there!

Klauhütte Bangzeit 200, also known as KB Zed or shortened as KBZ 200, was a team headed up by Canadian pianist, visual and sound artist Gordon 'El Gordo' Monahan. Beginning in 1991, Monahan began a series of 12- to 18-Hour Long Performance Art Presentations during which the three most popular and exemplary pieces of the Exotica Catalog were repeated, in the same order, either as live performances by different artists or groups, or by playing old vinyl records of each of them.

The songs in question were "Quiet Village" (Les Baxter),
"Tabu / Taboo" (Margarita Lecuona) and "Caravan" (Juan Tizol & Duke Ellington).

The performance events were referred to as "Irritainment in Sound".

A limited edition of 50 video tapes was released, in 1996, titled "Another Taboo Caravan Into Quiet Village - The KBZ 200 in Munich", of a performance in featuring Monahan, Alex Hacke, Bastiaan Maris, Eric Mingus, GenKen, Gordon W, Jim Sharpe, John Henry Nyenhuis, Larry Seven, Laura Kikauka, Maria Zastra, Mediamorph, Michael Evans, Roland Wolf, Sir Spinner Fine Vinyl, Stiletto Studios & tENTATIVELY, a cONVENIENCE. I've never seen it. You've never seen it. We'll never see it.

Also in 1996, the first of two Compact Discs were released consisting of existing versions, from Various Artists, of the Three Exotica Masterpieces. This was followed by a second collection in 1998.

Exotic Sounds of Quiet Village, Vol. 6: The Temporarily Last, and Yet Not Least, of a Coninuing Series of Exotic Excitementations

And so… We suddenly come to the end of the list of what I, so far, have been able to gather in addition to the original collections by Xtabay.

It is, in no way, the end of what I've collected so far. I'm doing my best, however, to divide the volumes in this compilation series into sets that will fit onto a CD. That way, you can listen to them, one at a time, in your automobile without having to mess with any of that New-Fangled USB Thumb-Drive crap, or a Satellite Radio Station, or anything owned by Alphabet, or Meta, or any other of the corporations who wish only to replace their Human Customers with Artificially Intelligent Idiot Boxes who, when responding to Price Hikes, simply Print More Money!!!

It's true. I am attempting to SAVE THE WORLD FROM ITSELF!!!

Like that's gonna happen, right?

I'll add the next collection as soon as I'm able to fill it in.

Chicks and Dudes, Boys and Girls, Guys and Dames, Here It Is…

Exotic Sounds of Quiet Village, Vol. 3:
Beginnings of a New Post Bonanza

Okay… As interesting as all of the items that Xtabay collected were, like 18 years ago, he was limited by the technology with which he was dealing at the time. Of course, the technology he was dealing with was so advanced that he thought he was in a sort-of Digital Technology Wonderland! My, how time flies…

After listening to the Xtabay Compilations for nearly two decades, and being made aware of other existing as well as a few NEW versions of Quiet Village, I decided to see if I could put another collection of different renditions, by different artists, of The Tiki Theme Song together.

Boy Howdy, was I in for a SHOCK!?! This is the first batch of those covers that I was able to gather together. I warn you… THERE ARE OTHERS!!!

Quiet Village: A Repost Extravaganza

Way back in the first decade of the 21st Century there was this Blog, operated by a fella from Australia who refered to himself as Xtabay, called "Xtabay's World". It started out on blognow.com.au (a site that ceased to exist at some point during Xtabay's operation) and end up on blogger.com (There are still a few Dead Links to it over there in the SideBar on the right side of this page). It was ASTOUNDING!!!

Xtabay specialized in posting Vintage Exotica (which is the vast majority of Exotica that existed at the time), Lounge and Space Age Pop, but he would occasionally sneak in some Jazz, Rock, Punk or whatever else he felt appropriate.

He put together several Compilations of Single Songs as recorded in different styles, in different genres and/or by different artists over the years he was in operation.

The best of these, imho, was "Exotic Sounds of Quiet Village". He put together two collections of "The Exotica/Tiki National Anthem" (at a size which was common at the time, each able to be burned onto a Compact Disk).

This collection was posted at Xtabay's World in, I'm pretty sure, 2006. It contains 21 different recordings of "Quiet Village" including the original, by Les Baxter, and others by Martin Denny, Henry Mancini, Lalo Schifrin, Pete Rugolo, Don Tiare The Surfmen, and Others.

11. Quiet Village (Mono Version) - Les Baxter
12. Quiet Village Bossa Nova - Martin Denny
13. Quiet Village (Mono Version) - Martin Denny
14. Quiet Village (Moog Version) - Martin Denny
15. Quiet Village - Martin Denny
16. Quiet Village (Cha Cha Cha) - Pete Rugolo
17. Quiet Village - The Royal Tees
18. Quiet Village - The Surfmen

Finally... Just Plain Christmas!!! Not Extra-Crispy.
Re-Uploaded

Not My Rip!

I've promised, several times I think, that if I ever found this record I'd post it. Well… Guess What!?!

I found this out on Usenet. I don't even remember which Newsgroup it was posted in. It's a very decent rip and I was happy to add it to my Christmas Collection.

 Have an Original Recipe Christmas!

Allow me to apologize for not being any more active on the blog for the last couple of years. I assume that most of you are aware that there was a Great Upheaval a while back in which many of the blogs that posted Out-of-Print materials, including a good number which were operated by people who I consider friends, were taken down or destroyed by various means.

I've got to admit that watching my friends' hard work being destroyed was disturbing.
Several posts here at The Tuna Melt were also targeted.
After going to the trouble of ripping an album to Mp3, cleaning the pops and scratches,
organizing the files and tagging them correctly, compressing them into a single archive file,
uploading that file to a file sharing site, and composing a blog post in which to
share it with the world, to have that work struck down comes as a real slap in the face.

Very much of the joy of operating The Tuna Melt,
and of sharing my interests with the world, has been compromised.

Most of the links in the posts on this blog are dead by now and I'm not certain that I want to spend the time and effort to bring them back to life. The suggestion has been made that it might be best if no mention of an Artist or Album Title be made in a post (in order to avoid being identified by automated "Search Bots", so I'm not going to mention this album in this post, or post its tracklist. These precautions may be over the top, but I think most of you will be able to figure out what the album is and what's on it from looking at the picture, eh?

The Tuna Melt has survived other situations like this one in the past.

Stars (of Bethlehem) on 45!

WARNING! This post is Just Plain Weird! And a bit Profane! And downright Sacrilegious!

I'll admit… My own personal collection of Christmas records is pretty extensive and, as such, includes some pretty bizarre items. These 45 rpm records, though, are from the collection of a friend who specializes in this sort of thing. Ranging from 1953 to 2002, I chose these records because I needed to rip copies for myself and then decided I'd share them with the rest of you.

The set includes the following:

Christmas Dragnet (Parts 1 & 2) by Stan Freberg - released in 1953 (and again in 1954 as "Yulenet"), this comedic piece was composed & performed by Stan Freberg and Daws Butler. The music is by Walter Schumann and the Orchestra is conducted by Nathan Scott. It was included, as one track, on Dr. Demento's "Greatest Christmas Novelty CD of All Time" in 1989.

Rock and Roll Christmas b/w New Year's Eve Party by George Thorogood & The Destroyers - Side A is a really rockin' blast of Holiday Merriment. The little heard Side B is one lame blues tune, boy howdy.

Bizarre Christmas Incident b/w Lonely Christmas Eve by Ben Folds - This single was pieced together using two previously released songs in 2003.

The Little Drummer Boy b/w Blue Christmas by Miracle Legion - Side A was featured on Rhino's "New Wave Christmas - Just Can't Get Enough" in 1996. Side B is nice, but includes a rather long verbal Holiday Greeting and introduction of the band, which is probably why it hasn't been released since this single came out in 1985. That's all I know about this band. You can read more at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miracle_Legion if you want to.

Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree b/w Blue Christmas by Dora Hall - Dora was, perhaps, the Ultimate Vanity Artist. Her husband, Leo Hulseman, was the founder of the Solo Cup Company and had so much money that he, apparently, didn't know what to do with it and, so, paid to produce as many records as Dora felt the need and/or desire to record (at least 17 lps and a list of 45 rpm singles about a mile long). None of these records was ever sold. They were distributed freely to anyone unlucky enough to buy a pack of plastic cups when there was a stack of them nearby. Anyone who ever responded by using the "Enroll Me As A Member of the Dora Hall Fan Club" coupon that often appeared on her single's picture sleeves were automatically sent future releases by mail.

White Christmas by '63 Mönröe - A Glam Punk band from London Ontario. Side B is a Monophonic version of the same song (for airplay on Monophonic AM Radio stations) so I didn't bother including it here.

Fuck Christmas b/w (Beep) Christmas by Fear - The Ultimate Punk Rock Christmas Tune! The "Unclean" version on Side A is backed by a "Clean" version for Radio Airplay that has not been re-released to my knowledge.

White Christmas b/w Blue Christmas by Atomic 61 - Noise Punk band from Portland. This Screams!

Various Artists: Winter Warnerland

'Tis the Season to Promote Your Stuff!

That, apparently, is what Warner Bros. Records was thinkin' back in the 80s. I posted a 1987 compilation of Warner Bros. artists performing Christmas related materials, called "Yulesville!", when I was here back in July of last year. Now, in response to a request, I'm postin' this one from 1988. It, like the other, features both music and spoken word "Holiday Greeting" messages.

Note that this is a rip from the Compact Disc, which contains more tracks than the vinyl pressing. Silly Earthling Traitor Vic only posts old vinyl records here but I, being from Mars, am not constrained by such trivial concerns. Bah! As there are 37 tracks here (@ 320kbps), I've split the post into two pieces.

Various Artists: Christmas at KFC

We Wish You a Merry Christmas!
You want that in Original Recipe, or Extra Crispy?

Many of you silly earthlings are unaware that Christmas, being a Christian Holiday, is celebrated madly in Japan! It is not a National Holiday (nor should it be in a nation that is 84-96% Budhist/Shintoist) and, so, is not a "day off from work". The Japanese do, however, celebrate the purely secular aspects of the day (meaning… They Shop Like Crazy and Spend Lots of Money).

Shopping Malls and Shopping Districts spend loads of ¥en on elaborate and beautiful displays. Shiny, sparkly lights shine and sparkle all over the place. And one American Corporation, in particular, has utilized the holiday as a marketing tool for years. Many Japanese are convinced that the typical American Christmas Dinner is provided by… Kentucky Fried Chicken!?!

Yep. That's Right. They begin weeks ahead of the actual day, placing orders for "Christmas Barrels". They also spend huge piles of cash on "Christmas Cakes" (sponge cakes, frosted with whipped cream and decorated, usually, with strawberries).

The KFC connection is, primarily, a result of the intense marketing campaigns of the old KFC Corporation and, now, Yum Brands. Most of the KFCs in Japan have near-lifesize statues of Colonel Sanders standing out in front of them and, around Christmas, they all get dressed in Santa Claus outfits.

I mention this only because I wish to point out that Kentucky Fried Chicken has been a huge promoter of Christmas for several decades now, as is evidenced by this post. Allow me, please, to present two fabulous Classic Christmas Recordings from 1966 and 1968 (respectively)…

Various Artists: Badger A-Go-Go

Dat Tooner Melt Got Good Toons, Aina Hey?

If you ever sipped cold water from a bubbler and wished it was PBR, this is one record you're gonna want! It's a compilation featuring bands representing the Milwaukee New Music Scene of the late 80s and early 90s such as Die Kreuzen, E-I-E-I-O, Plasticland and Couch Flambeau.

Liner notes on the back cover read: "15 of the Greatest Sounds. Here's the lp that had to happen. The swingin' sounds of the Badger State that have made it Nationally.

Without a doubt, this lp is a collector's item… representing Contemporary Sounds, R&B, Psychedelic, Rock & Roll, Calypso, Folk Rock, and the Mod Sound.

Not only is this a great lp for listening and dancing… It's a party in itself."

So… Grab yourself a twelver of Pabsts, and few links of Goose Liver Sausage and a wheel of Medium Sharp Cheddar and Get Ready to Get Down!

A Cure for the Common Coldness

Okay...
Reader's Digest Box Sets have a bad reputation these days. There are several sites (all of which I respect greatly) that go to great lengths to convince potential buyers to Beware the Reader's Digest Label.

In a related entry, the Space Age Pop Music site has this to say about them: "Usually, however distinguished the performers may be, the stylistic effect of the Reader's Digest cachet is deadening. These renditions are almost always performed in a humorously straight-forward manner, avoiding any unusual orchestrations, dramatic attacks, jarring shifts in volume, rhythm, or tone, and individual interpretations. When the box promises a bunch of organ music for people who like organ music, that's what it delivers. A bunch of organ music played essentially anonymously by performers who might as be anonymous for what little personality they are allowed to sneak through."

You can read the entire post here: http://www.spaceagepop.com/rc003.htm

That being said... For the most part the Reader's Digest Sets are deserving of just such trivialization. This particular collection, however, stands out from most of the others in my opinion.

For one thing (and it's an Important one) It's HAWAIIAN MUSIC, for Pete's sake. The music on these records spans the Hapa Haole Spectrum, from passable Exotica to Orchestral Easy Listening. As it was released in 1970 it contains a fair amount of NOW Sound content as well as the more traditional Strings and Percussion. While there is not one single note of Hawaiian Folk or Slack Key Guitar on these five discs, there is an impressive range of musical styles (from Exotica to Easy Listening and NOW Sound Instrumental and Choral arrangements) which possess a tremendous dynamic range and a decent amount of fairly risky originality (check out the included recording of "Bali Ha'i", by Don Kalana & The Tahitians w/ Chorus, which is probably the most upbeat and bouncy rendition of the song that I've ever heard).

In other words... This is one Great Set of Discs!

And, now that it's February, we're probably all suffering from a bit of Cabin Fever (unless, of course, we're in the Southern Hemisphere, in which case we're all runnin' around 'bout butt naked and eatin' ice cream and settling down in the evenings with the Air Conditioners hummin'... You're Time Will Come!!!) and the best cure I've ever found for Dismal Winter Weather is a Tall Cool Rum Drink and Tropical Tunes!

So put on your Aloha Shirts and Muu Muus, mix up a tall cool Zombie or Missionary's Downfall, flip open your copy of "The Book of Tiki" or "Leis, Luaus and Alohas" and give these discs a spin!
